What does your wardrobe need?

As an Image Consultant and Professional Organizer I love to get into people’s closets! Do you want to organize your wardrobe so that it’s easy to find something to wear for any occasion? Organizing always begins with taking stock of what you have. Schedule time (at least 2 hours) and begin by:

  1. 1. Clearing your bed or using a rolling clothing rack to stage your inventory.
  2. 2. Remove everything from your closet and organize it by categories: tops, bottoms, sleepwear, shoes, etc.
  3. 3. Discard worn clothing immediately.
  4. 4. Sort items for donations and consignments next.
  5. 5. Set aside items that need repairs and alterations.

Now it’s time to see if you have the wardrobe basics:

UNDERGARMENTS: Well-fitting undergarments are a must. Specialty items for particular clothing are critical, too. For women these include strapless and halter bras, body shapers, no-line panties. For men, you want tank sytle, crew neck and v-neck undershirts as well as briefs, boxers, and socks in neutrals, colors, and prints! PANTS: Well made jeans in current styles are a must. That includes casual and dressy jeans. Most jeans have some stretch in them so don’t compromise comfort for fit. TOPS: Think spring…it’s still cool enough to layer. For women – camisoles, crisp white shirts, tissue tee shirts. For men – solid color tee shirts, crisp white shirts, print shirts. OUTERWEAR: Don’t forget light weight jackets, trench coats, and sweaters in bold colors; they spruce up a neutral outfit. If your wardrobe is missing these very basic items make a list and get ready to shop.

Clothing options

Not everyone can afford to buy a whole new wardrobe. Start with the basics and look at the clothes in your closet:

  • Make sure they’re clean; remove any stains.
  • Make sure they’re pressed – either by you, or professionally.
  • Take care of repairs & alterations; replace missing buttons, alter hems, etc.

Don’t forget to donate or consign clothing that doesn’t fit. There is no excuse not to look good if you address the basics! The Outside In Organization & Makeovers approach starts with wearing what looks good on today’s body.

Men want to look great during the holidays, too. The basics are no different for you guys: 1. FIT: The biggest mistake that men make is wearing clothes that don’t fit well.
